Urban Mosquito Control – a Case Study

چکیده
Emergence and resurgence of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, Japanese encephalitis and filariasis both in tropical and subtropical regions are well known. It is estimated that 500 million – one in every ten persons suffer from one or more tropical diseases and the global situation of lymphatic filariasis is reported as the 4th rank1.. The geo-climatic conditions in India are conducive for the transmission of vector-borne diseases. The magnitude of the mosquito menace and prevalence of mosquito-borne diseases depend upon various factors such as developmental activities, human interference, climatic changes, availability of parasitic load in the community and socio-cultural practices2.

Aquatic effects of aerial spraying for mosquito control over an urban area.
In an effort to combat West Nile Virus, planes dispersed insecticide over Sacramento, CA, treating nearly 50,000 hectares with pyrethrins and the synergist piperonyl butoxide (PBO). Widespread dispersal of insecticide over a metropolitan area, coupled with extensive pretreatment data on the area's urban creeks, provided a unique opportunity to study effects of mosquito control agents on aquatic...
متن کاملSignificance of travel to rural areas as a risk factor for malarial anemia in an urban setting.
The epidemiology of malaria in urban environments is poorly characterized, yet increasingly problematic. We conducted an unmatched case-control study of risk factors for malarial anemia with high parasitemia in urban Kisumu, Kenya, from June 2002 through February 2003. Cases (n = 80) were hospital patients with a hemoglobin level < or = 8 g/dL and a Plasmodium parasite density > or = 10,000/mic...
متن کاملAre there geographic and socio-economic differences in incidence, burden and prevention of malaria? A study in southeast Nigeria
RATIONALE It is not clearly evident whether malaria affects the poor more although it has been argued that the poor bear a very high burden of the disease. This study explored the socioeconomic and geographic differences in incidence and burden of malaria as well as ownership of mosquito nets. METHODS Structured questionnaires were used to collect information from 1657 respondents from rural ...
متن کاملThe need for collaboration among government agencies to reduce mosquito production in mandated stormwater treatment structures.
Efforts to improve water quality increasingly rely on structural stormwater best management practices (BMPs) to remove pollutants from urban runoff. These structures can unintentionally produce mosquitoes and may play a role in the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. A questionnaire was distributed to over 300 stormwater and mosquito control agencies in the United States to assess the prevalence...
متن کاملRemotely-sensed vegetation indices identify mosquito clusters of West Nile virus vectors in an urban landscape in the northeastern United States.
Heterogeneity in urban landscapes can influence the effectiveness of mosquito-borne disease control. We used remotely sensed vegetation indices to discriminate among mosquito habitats within a densely populated urban environment in New Haven, CT. ASTER derived vegetation indices were identified for 16 sites where adult mosquitoes were trapped over the summer of 2004. Canonical correlation analy...
